Quick Review Summary
A dehumidifier’s job is to dehumidify and the Midea Cube simply dehumidifies faster and more efficiently than any other 50 pint dehumidifier we’ve tested – and we’ve tested many such units (34 high capacity units alone). It’s also highly energy efficient, quiet, and has all of the features and functionality you might need in a dehumidifier. It’s highly recommended as the best dehumidifier in 2024.
Performance Test Results
Energy Efficiency
The Midea Cube draws less power than any other high capacity 50 pint dehumidifier we’ve tested. At 50% RH it draws only 512 watts of power. Most other 50 pint units draw over 600 watts under the same conditions.
The Cube also removes moisture faster than any other 50 pint dehumidifier we’ve tested. In our moisture removal tests, it consistently lowered room humidity in our test room from 90% RH down to 40% RH in under 8 minutes. Most other 50 pint units took at least 10 minutes. Some models took up to 14+ minutes.
The Cube’s ability to combine low power draw with fast moisture removal gives it very good energy efficiency. It is the most energy efficient 50 pint dehumidifier we’ve tested.
Noise Output
The Cube’s unique design allowed it to perform very well in our noise output testing, despite the fact that it has much higher airflow than most competitors (usually more airflow equates to more fan/wind noise which results in more total noise output).
First, the Cube intakes air on two sides and the back of the dehumidifier (most competitors only intake air on the back with less total surface area) – the large surface area through which the Cube intakes air minimizes noise output. You can see part of the right side intake in the photo below.
Second, it outputs air through a large outlet (most competitors have a smaller outlet) – the large surface area through which it outputs air also minimizes noise output. You can see the top exhaust in the photo above.
Noise output for the Cube was measured at 66.4 dB on high fan speed with the sound meter placed right above its control panel. Most other top exhaust dehumidifiers we’ve tested were measured at 70+ dB despite having much less airflow than the Cube.
The Frigidaire FFAD5033W1, for example, was measured at 70.2 dB with a maximum airflow of 229 CFM. The Honeywell TP70WKN was measured at 73.3 dB with a maximum airflow of 182 CFM. The Cube, again, was measured at only 66.4 dB with a maximum airflow of 430 CFM!
The Cube does have less of an advantage over these other models on low fan speed. On low it was measured at 65.4 dB. The Frigidaire was measured at 64.8 dB and the Honeywell at 67.3 dB.
But, you’ll almost always want to run these dehumidifiers on high fan speed to maximize moisture removal rate, and on this setting the Cube is almost 5 dB quieter than most competitors.
Moisture Removal
In a 50 sq. ft. room, the Cube lowered room humidity from 90% RH down to 40% RH in 7 minutes, 39 seconds. This is the best result of any 50 pint dehumidifier we’ve tested. The next closest competitor is the Frigidaire FFAD5033W1, with a time of 7 minutes, 56 seconds. Most other 50 pint units we’ve tested take at least 10 minutes in the same test. The hOmeLabs HME020031N, for example, took 10 minutes, 3 seconds. The Honeywell TP70WKN took 10 minutes, 43 seconds.
The Cube’s excellent performance in our moisture removal testing can largely be attributed to its unique design. With intakes on three sides, a large outlet, and a high CFM fan, it’s simply able to move more air quicker than competitors which feature a more traditional design.
Hygrometer Accuracy
The Cube’s built-in hygrometer consistently read humidity to be within 2% of the actual room humidity. This is once again a very good result.
Included Features, Functionality, Build Quality, Warranties, and Value
Durability (Build Quality)
General Impressions
The Cube is made using distinctly higher quality parts and materials than most competitors. A good example is its control panel. The Cube features high quality rubber buttons and a very clear high quality LCD display. Many competitors have much lower quality non-tactile “touch” buttons and visibly lower quality LCD displays.
Consumer Feedback
Consumer reviews for the Cube are overwhelmingly positive. There are far fewer complaints about this dehumidifier failing after a few years of use than there are for most competitors.
Overall Category Score
The Cube earns a 5/5 for durability. Long term consumer feedback supports our own observations – that this dehumidifier is very well built with high quality parts and materials.
Adjustability
The Cube features only two fan speeds, a manual mode (on which you set a target humidity level), a continuous mode (on which the dehumidifier runs continuously independent of the room’s current humidity level), and a “Max” mode (on which it runs continuously on maximum fan speed).
The Cube’s timer can be set in half hour increments up to 10 hours and in one hour increments from 10 hours up to 24 hours.
Overall Category Score
Certain competitors do provide additional modes and fan speeds – so the Cube gets only a 4/5 for adjustability.
Versatility
Set Humidity Range
The Cube has a set humidity range of 35% to 85%. This is right around the industry standard.
Operating Temperature Range
This dehumidifier’s operating temperature range is 41° F to 95° F. This is the industry standard.
Gravity Drainage
The Cube does have a gravity drain plug. You can connect an included 2 ft. long hose or your own garden hose to this plug to drain the dehumidifier using gravity.
Note that you can use gravity drainage with the main unit seated on top of the water tank OR not seated on the water tank (bucketless mode).
Built-in Pump
The Cube we tested for review did not come equipped with a built-in pump, but there is a Cube identical to the one we tested that adds pump drainage – the MAD50PS1QWT.
Overall Category Score
With multiple setups for gravity drainage, an included drain hose, and a model available for pump drainage, the Cube earns a 5/5 for versatility.
Extra Features
Defrost
Like most other compressor based dehumidifiers, the Cube also features an automatic defrost mode. If its evaporator coils freeze up it will automatically switch to this mode, on which it cycles off its compressor and only runs its fan to melt the ice. There is a warning light on its control panel that lights up when this mode is activated.
Check Filter
This dehumidifier does have a check filter light to alert you when its air filters need to be cleaned.
Fill Level Selection
The Cube uniquely features a “Fill Level” button that sets the fill level for its water tank. At fill level 1 it only fills to 2.25 gallons. At fill level 2 it fills to 3 gallons, at level 3 to 3.75 gallons and at level 4 it fills to full capacity – 4.25 gallons.
The reason why this feature is important – some users may not be able to lift and carry a completely full water tank, so being able to set the dehumidifier to a lower fill level for a lighter water tank is helpful.
App Control
The Cube can be controlled wirelessly via an app. The app can also alert you when the dehumidifier’s bucket is full and update you on the room’s current humidity level.
Overall Category Score
The Cube has all of the features you might need in a dehumidifier so it gets a 5/5 in the category.
Ease of Use
Setup Difficulty
The Cube’s control panel is well-labeled and easy to understand. You can easily set it to different modes and settings without consulting a manual.
Filter Removal Difficulty
It’s very easy to pull out and replace this dehumidifier’s air filters.
Manual Clarity
The Cube’s manual is well written and well-illustrated.
Water Tank Size
The Cube has a massive 4.25 gallons (34 pint) water tank. Average tank size for a 50 pint dehumidifier is about 12 to 13 pints.
Overall Category Score
Mostly because of its massive water tank, the Cube easily scores a 5/5 in the category.
Portability
The Cube weighs about 42 lb. This is right around an average weight for a 50 pint dehumidifier. For comparison, the Frigidaire FFAD5033W1 weighs 43 lb. The hOmeLabs HME020031N weighs 40 lb.
The Cube has a top handle. So does the Frigidaire. The hOmeLabs and most other competitors have side pocket handles.
Due to its unique design, the Cube does not feature cord storage. The Frigidaire, hOmeLabs, and most other dehumidifiers with a more traditional design have hooks on the back around which you can wrap their power cords for storage.
The Cube does “nest” for storage though. You can rotate the main body 90° in either direction to place it inside of its water tank (instead of on top of it) for storage.
The Cube can also be used entirely without its water tank in “bucketless” mode, with a hose connected to drain it using gravity – which gives it a much more compact form factor than competitors.
Warranty (Manufacturer’s)
The Cube comes with only a 1 year warranty. Most other compressor based dehumidifiers on the market also only come with a 1 year warranty, but we would have liked to see Midea stand out from the competition in this area and offer a longer warranty.
Value
The Cube provides well above average performance at right around an average price for a 50 pint dehumidifier. This makes it a good value.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, you’re buying a dehumidifier to dehumidify. And the Cube simply does it better – that is to say it does it more quickly and more efficiently – than any other dehumidifier currently on the market. It receives our strong recommendation as the best dehumidifier in 2024.
